Description: |
Abstract:
A centreless machine for grinding balls &c. consists of an annularly grooved grinding-wheel B between which, and a regulating wheel F, the blanks 25 are supported on a corrugated rest 20. The regulating-wheel rotates on an axis slightly inclined to the horizontal, and is reciprocated axially by a cam 16, Fig. 10, to equalize wear on both sides of the grinding-grooves; it also is advanced to, and withdrawn from the grinding- wheel, to allow of insertion and removal of the balls, by a cam which gives partial to and fro rotation to a screw D engaging the slidable carriage C of the regulating wheel; the cam is driven through worm gearing by an electric motor 29. The balls are fed to the first, or coarse grinding, groove by a tube 23 and are moved successively to the following grooves, in which successively fine grinding is performed, by a member 30 having therein notches 31 and having arms 32 engaged by guides 33, 34 which are moved by cams 35, 36 operating in timed relation to the movements of the regulating wheel to and from the grinding wheel. The reciprocating movement may be applied to the grinding-wheel or to the work-rest instead of to the regulating-wheel. |
