"Vintage Machinery" entry for Alfred Herbert Ltd.
Description:
A headstock for use with tools of a high cutting speed is constructed with a two-speed drive through gearing, the usual direct belt drive being dispensed with, and the cone speed increased so that the speeds usually obtained by the direct drive are obtained by the quicker of the two speeds, the other speed corresponding to the usual back-gear. The cone pulley and the two wheels c, d are secured on a sleeve loose on the lathe spindle, the wheels gearing with a pair e, f which can be separately clutched to the back-shaft g on which is a pinion gearing with a wheel on the lathe spindle. A suitable form of friction clutch for each wheel consists of an internal split ring n, Fig. 3, which is expanded against a flange on the wheel by the radial movement of a wedge n<2>, produced by the longitudinal movement of a rod m in the backshaft. The rod has a bowl m<2> which may engage the bevelled end of either of the wedges, the rod being pinned to a ring l<3>, which is slid by a sleeve l<1> carrying a rack l, Fig. 5, gearing with. a pinion k rotated by a segment on a hand-shaft j<1>.
