Description:
One hundred and thirty years after our inventor developed a method to make a screw thread easier to use by trimming off the incomplete start of the tread and then tapering the front face of the remaining thread, "Higbee threads" have become ever more popular because CNC machining makes it simple to achieve. In those pre-CNC days, though, Higbee patented a tool for trimming screw-threads in accordance with his idea; see patent 501,942. Use of the Higbee thread is mandated in North American fire-hose couplings, which is reportedly the application that inspired Higbee to create this thread modification.
