Description: |
This is a machinist's scratch gage based on a design commonly
used by micrometers. The gage bar is threaded, and the head
runs on this thread. The head is marked with divisions such
that it is possible to position the fence within a couple of
thousandths on an inch by turning the head.
Particularly interesting on this piece is how it shows the
inch graduations. The threaded bar has a square notch milled
down its length, not only providing a flat surface for marking
the graduations, but also a reference edge for the markings on
the head.
This is a very clever design, and would have been simple and
cheap to produce.
