Phillips. "No. 53—Rufus Foster of the City of Halifax, builder, for a stove and annex for heating several rooms, 1859. (See drawing page 9)"Petition to #9—petitioner was born in and has always resided in Nova Scotia—Halifax 23 Nov. 1859."Oath—sworn before David M. Dodd at Halifax 16 Dec. 1859."Specification (with drawing)—a damper is placed in the upper floor level of a chimney flue from a fire on the lower floor and the smoke directed into a barrel heater and back into the flue above the damper so that the heater is heated and warms the room ———. Witness—D. E. Gildert and James G. Foster, 16 Dec. 1859."The 1838 Nova Scotia Census shows a Rufus Foster, a schoolmaster in Aylesford Township, Kings County, living with one woman of majority age. The 1851 census shows him living in an Aylesford household with two males and female under 10 years of age plus two males between 10 and 20 years of age, A female was between 30 and 40 years of age and male and a female were 40 to 50 years of age. The 1891 book, The Canadian Album Volume 1 has a biography of James Gilbert Foster, Q.C., probate judge for Halifax. He was the son of "Rufus Foster, a descendant of a U. E. Loyalist family, and Christian Foster, of Scotch descent." |
