The edge of the main shank and facing inner surface of the movable jaw have fine rack teeth. A spring slide between the movable jaw and main shank acts as a wedge to set the adjustment.
Wrenches variously marked "CHICAGO WRENCH CO." and "MODEL GRIP / PAT. APL'D FOR" match this design. The MODEL GRIP wrench was announced to the hardware trade in late 1897 and early 1899.
