Description: |
This invention is the disposable safety razor; Gillette had patented a safety razor (though not the first) in 1901. It appears that that Gillette's earlier safety razor never reach production. In developing the disposable razor, the challenges were to produce a blade made of very thin sheet steel and keep it rigid during shaving. Gillette's simple holder achieved the latter goal while allowing for rapid blade changes and easy cleaning. Gillette and partner William Nickerson, a chemist with manufacturing expertise, had established the American Safety Razor Company in 1901 but renamed it the following year to the Gillette Safety Razor Company (Nickerson's name, of course, being unsuitable). |
