Description: |
| A cam face on the swinging handle portion compresses the movable jaw against the fixed jaw. A tension spring tends to close the jaws. The jaws are opened by the side links to the swinging handle. The specifications note U.S. patent 637,921 as relevant prior art.
The only clear marking on a known example is "D.R. PATENT;" a write-up in the April 15 1904 Zeitschrift für Werkzeugmaschinen und Werkzeuge names the manufacturer as Gesellschaft für Werkzeug-Industrie G.m.b.H. (Remscheid-Haddenbach, Germany). Parallel patents were granted in several European countries (see Espacenet). British patent GB-190226218 does not include the pipe wrench version, or mention previous U.S. patents. The Swiss and German patents give the German name (Aachen) for Aix-La-Chapelle.
German patent DE-149630 granted with an effective date of July 5, 1903 does not include the links between the handle and movable jaw, and has matching tapers on the handle and underside of the movable jaw to generate "binding" pressure to hold the movable jaw in position. |
