Carl Matthews Article from August 1858 Journal of the Franklin Institute
|
Description: |
A writeup on this patent in the August 1848 Journal of the Franklin Institute gave credit to "Mr. J. Peck, and Mr. L. Pardee, of New Haven". Pardee was presumably Leonard Pardee, a joiner in New Haven at the time, who became a successful carriage maker. We speculate that Pardee was responsible for integrating the treadle mechanism to operate the vise, which improved on the handwheel in Peck's patentA. D. Jones' Gazetteer for Connecticut for 1857-8 lists Jeremiah Peck as a machinist in New Haven. There was a planing mill, L. Pardee & Co., in New Haven.A classified ad in the 1848-11-11 Scientific American: " PECK'S PATENT VISE WITH FOOT LEVER. THIS Vise is worked entirely by the foot and is admitted by all who have used them to be the best and, strength, saving of time and convenience considered, the cheapest Vise in use. For sale by QUINCY & DELAPIERRE, 71 John st. New York; Geo H. Gray & Co., Boston; Curtis & Hand, Philadelphia; Way & Brothers, Hartford, Ct.; and by the proprietor. J. S. GRIFFING, New Haven, Ct." |
