Description:
This patent covers the riveting of pocket seams to create a more rugged garment. The idea came from Russian-born Reno tailor Jacob W. Davis, who approached one of his cloth suppliers, German-born merchant Levi Strauss, to help finance a patent in exchange for half the rights. Davis became Strauss' production manager for Levi Strauss & Co. Originally called "waist overalls" (as opposed to "bib overalls") and made out of blue denim, we now know them as blue jeans.
