Description: |
The gripping chain in this patent is similar to the chain in Bessolo's patent no. 1,548,344. The latching action is accomplished by a cam bolt which shifts the toothed gripping end of the handle against similar toothed area on the gripping chain.
The handle which operates the cam bolt has a spring catch which fits into a notch in the main handle to hold the gripping teeth against the chain.
In the drawing, Fig. 3 shows the latch structure bearing against the surface of a pipe; Fig. 6 shows the detail of the "fixed" end of the gripping chain, and Figs. 7 & 8 show details of the spring catch on the end of the cam operating handle.
Parallel patent no. 1,651,576 shows a much simpler latch for this style of chain tongs. |
