The suspension system in this patent is for the BESSOLO ROTARY TONGS as described in patent no. 1,447,920 and subsequent enhancements, or any similar tongs.
For example, the drawing shows a "safety chain" on the tongs which was the subject of patent no. 1,587,892.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is the overall view, Figs. 2 & 3 are details of the adjustable suspension at the head end of the tongs, and Figs. 4 & 5 show alternate arrangements for an adjustable attachment at the end of the handle.
This suspension system is more elaborate than the single chain suspension shown in an early view of the Bessolo tongs -- see the 2nd image in the entry for patent no. 1,447,920.
In the absence of proof, it is only speculation that Bethlehem Shipbuilding incorporated this suspension system in the improved BESSOLO ROTARY TONGS produced in the early - mid 1920s. |
