Description: |
| The adjusting nut works on parallel rack teeth on the edges of a slot in the center of the handle. The end of the handle is a screwdriver, and notches in the jaw faces fit corners of a hexagonal nut. Corresponding British patent GB-189626640 was registered Nov. 24, 1896.
Manufacturer attribution based on a listing reprinted in Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" and 1897 IRON AGE "new product announcement;" Garvin Machine Co. contracted to make them.
Evidence introduced in "Ideal Wrench Co. v. Garvin Machine Machine Company" (published in 1903) includes the fact that approximately 2000 wrenches were made during the summer of 1897; they broke easily in the course of ordinary use and the end result was failure. |
