Description: |
| This important patent covers the railway air-brake, which was a major safety advance because it replaced the need for a railwayman to manual activate the brakes in each car; instead, an air line interconnected the cars and activated all the brakes together. A later improvement changed the system so activate on pressure drop, rather than rise, which acted as a fail-safe if the air system suffered a pressure loss. |
