Description: |
Harry R. Williams - patent attorney
This invention relates to those metal-cutting tools known as shapers. These machines are built with horizontally reciprocating rams for making horizontal cuts and with vertically reciprocating rams for making vertical cuts. The object of this invention is to provide a simple and rigid attachment with a vertically reciprocating ram that may be easily and quickly substituted for the horizontally reciprocating ram and connected with the standard operating mechanism for the purpose of transforming the horizontal shaper into a vertical shaper when it is desired to make vertical cuts instead of horizontal cuts. This object is attained by providing a housing with a saddle carrying a vertical tool holding ram and horizontal lever for reciprocating the ram, designed in such form that the housing may be set into and secured in the desired position in the ways at the top of the machine frame in such manner that the cutting pull of the horizontal lever of the ram is downward and tends/to draw the housing down upon the frame, thus insuring rigidity and accuracy of work for a long period of time.
