Description: |
A rare "EQUILIBRISTAT" RAILROAD TRACK GRADE LEVEL in unused condition by D.J. Whittemore, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, patented August 29, 1899. This extremely complex level was designed to assess the perception of equilibrium felt by train passengers in relation to the grade of the tracks and the speed of the train when making turns. Whittemore was the Chief Engineer of the Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway and he made several public presentations to his brethren engineers regarding his invention. The level consists of two tubes, which have different mechanical properties and work in conjunction with each other to gauge the "feel" of a ride on the train. Perhaps the most astounding aspect of this invention was that several others claimed to have invented it before Whittemore. The outside of the lacquered brass case is engraved with the inventor name and patent information as well as the designation "Equilibristat".
