Description:
The two sides hinged together are simple and effective.

A known example of U.S. production is marked "BAUER'S PAT. MAR 10 1885 P. D. & CO. PHILA." Paine, Diehl & Co. was advertising the wrench in 1886. An 1889 IRON AGE ad shows McCoy & Sanders (New York) as "sole makers."

The U.S. specifications note the patent numbers assigned in several European countries -- Germany; October 21, 1883 (DE-26723) -- France; October 26, 1883 (158,235) -- Belgium; October 27, 1883 (63,011) -- Great Britain; June 14, 1883 (GB-188302968). The British and German patents include multiple forms not present in the U.S. patent. In the German patent, Bauer's address is given as Bathurst in the Gambia (Africa), and his name appears as "Johann Carl Bauer."
