Description:
The grasping jaws can be adjusted both at the pivot as well as near the grasping end. A couple of variations for the adjusting screw are shown. The patent shows the device as an adjustable jaw on a bit brace, as a hand vise, and as a bench vise.

This patent elaborates on the general idea in Goodrich's Dec. 10, 1878 patent (no. 210,684) and alternatives in Goodrich's May 18, 1880 patent (no. 227,686).

Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1839-1930" notes an 1883 MECHANICS listing showing COOK & McLANE of New York producing this as an adjustable brace wrench.
