Description: |
Most of the patents prior to 1836 were lost in the December 1836 fire. Only about 2,000 of the almost 10,000 documents were recovered, and this patent was not among them. From December 1829 Journal of the Franklin Institute Vol. 9, page 403. "For an improved Auger, called the 'Serpentine Screw Auger;' George Shetter, York county, Pennsylvania, September 10."The difference between this and the common screw auger consists principally in continuing the circular shank or stem of the auger down through the body of the screw part, as in some cork screws, or, in fact, as in screws in general. The patentee observes that the spiral, or rim, may be continued on the shaft, or stem, any length, and the auger will bore freely and easily, without drawing it from the hole." |
