This invention relates to a lathe construction, and has as its primary object the provision of an improved turning tool characterized by interchangeable elements whereby the same may be readily adapted to face plate turning, as in working wood or the like, or for metal spinning. An additional object of the invention is the provision of such device characterized by a work holder which may be readily positioned so that the operator may stand in front of the face plate while doing face plate work, and may work on the rear of the face plate, without the necessity of reversing the material being worked upon. An additional object of the invention is the provision of a small, compact machine which, may be readily adapted to face plate work on articles of relatively great diameter. Still another object of the invention is the provision of such a tool or machine characterized by the ready interchangeability of parts, and particularly by a split bearing assembly wherein the spindle assembly may be removed from the headstock, and replaced as an integral unit, without the necessity of tearing down the machine. A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the work spindle may carry on the opposite end a buffing wheel in readily accessible position, so that the same machine may be used for a relatively wide variety of operations and purposes.
