Description:

This is the first US patent for a lathe-type veneer slicing machine, which is a vital ingredient for creating inexpensive plywood, which in turn reduced the cost of housing. While Dresser's patent marks an early appearance of rotary veneer slicing in the USA, it was already well underway elsewhere. The 1843 Penny Cyclopedia, in an article on wood cutting, mentions a Russian rotary veneer slicing machine: "one hundred feet in length of veneering may be cut by this machine in the space of three minutes." Furthermore, in 1828 the Philadelphia firm of Richardson & Co. was advertising their "Improved Patent Rotary Veneer cutter propelled by steam power".
