Description:
This improvement to David Heaton's button-setting pliers (February 23, 1875 patent no. 160,056 and October 19, 1875 patent no. 168,994) adapts the idea to multi-pronged buttons.

The button holder is a recess cut in the side of the upper jaw; the prongs are pressed through the leather or fabric against curved bottom dies in the lower jaw which cause the prongs to curl back into the leather or fabric.

A known example is lavishly marked on the sides surrounding the pivot: "HEATON PENINSULAR BUTTON FASTENER - SOLE MFR'S - PROV., R.I. / THE HEATON PAT. APRIL 13, 1880 - LICENSED TO BE USED WITH HEATON FASTENERS ONLY"
