Description: |
| The slide with the thumb screw adjusts the opening of the hinged jaws. The jaw faces are at right angles to the axis of the shank, and have gripping teeth. Marketed as Buzzell's Basin Wrench; it appears frequently in late 19th and early 20th Century hardware catalogs.
An unmarked "T" handle basin wrench combines the jaw form from this patent with the adjustment mode from Buzzell's Oct. 14, 1890 pipe wrench patent (no. 438,343).
Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" identifies the C.S. Osborne Co. of Newark, NJ as the maker of the Buzzell and Hegarty (pat. no. 55,100) basin wrenches. A 1911 trade directory lists Wm. Johnson of Newark, NJ as maker.
