| "This invention relates to those parts of machine usually denominated 'keys,' and which are employed for holding gears, wheels, or other details on machines in fixed circumferential position on their supporting-shafts. The object of the invention is to furnish a key of that class which shall be efficient in operation and more convenient and economical to manufacture and use. To this end my invention consists in the improvements and combination hereinafter set forth."Yes, this is the patent for the well-known "Woodruff key". It is distinguished from other shaft keys by having the slot cut with a rounded bottom, and the key itself has one side cut into a matching convex circular shape. The main benefit of a Woodruff key is that the slot is easier to cut. |
