Description: |
| Bemis' specifications recognize the A.B. Davis combination pipe and nut wrench (no. 94,085), but claim this design as an improvement on Amos Call's Aug. 28, 1866 patent (no. 57,621). This patent was the basis for B&C pipe and nut wrenches for the remainder of the tool's production.
The nail-claw feature shown in the patent does not appear on known examples of the wrench. The screw holding the pipe gripping bit was a feature of early production of these tools. It was replaced by a transverse pin, which appears in ad images beginning ca. 1891.
Early examples of the B&C Combination cite two patents by date: Aug. 28, 1866 57,621 and Dec. 2, 1873 (this patent). Some examples of the B&C combination also cite the McLaren patent (nos. 59,852 and RE8,064) which also is connected to combination pipe & nut wrenches produced by Tower & Lyon & Union Hardware.
W.S. Bemis patents in 1893 (498,204 and 501,860) addressed manufacturing processes and modifications to the pipe gripping aspects of the wrench. |
