Vintage Machinery entry for Bentel, Margedant & Co.
Description:
It's a bit difficult to tell from the patent drawing, but this is the genesis of the modern jointer (the reissue, RE6,109, has a better drawing). Climer and Riley's vision was of a universal woodworking machine—jointer, planer, molder, rabbetter, etc. They sold their rights to McBeth, Bentel, Margedant & Co., who were very successful with the Universal Wood Worker and could rightly claim to be the maker of the first jointer. Once these patents expired, others simplified the machine down to the single-function jointer.
