Description:
The spring loaded jaws open when the end cap is pushed. The case has a watch-case cover opener on one side. This small wrench is for winding watch springs. Birch patented a larger version with a "T" handle on the end on May 14, 1878 (Pat. no. 203,581) as a self-adjusting socket wrench.

Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" shows an 1880 Scientific American advertisement for Birch's Self-Adjusting Watch Key (corresponding to the patent reissue), and an 1878 listing for the nut wrench.

Birch's other related patents include 102,753 (May 10, 1870), 228,860 (June 15, 1880), 282,605, and 282,606 (August 7, 1883).
