2 Congress Street, Cohoes, NY
Description:
C. A. Snow & Co. - Patent Attorneys

The square was originally designed and claimed to be a protractor too. This is clearly shown in one of the sketches included in the patent. One small difference should be noted is that Tracey Auringer omitted the angle markings on the curved hidden portion of the hinge. This omission can be clearly seen in the photos.(courtesy of Avrum Silverman, Wellesley, MA)

I ran Tracy Auringer through the 1901 and 1910 Troy City Directory, which includes listings for Cohoes, NY (and which are the closest to the patent year that we have here in our collection at the Burden Museum.) In 1901, the household listing shows Isaac M. Auringer owning a house at 2 Oriskany Street, Cohoes. Also boarding there are Samuel M. Auringer and Tracy Auringer, with all 3 listed as carpenters by trade, but without a business affiliation, leading to the bare-faced assumption that they were employed in one of the factories rather than out on their own. The 1910 directory shows the address to have changed to 2 Congress Street, Cohoes. (It has the exact same location description as in 1901, so it is the street name that changed, and not the residence.) Isaac is still listed as owner, with Sam and Tracy still listed as boarders. There is a 4th carpenter now listed as a boarder, John J. Auringer, as well as Jesse Auringer, listed as a teacher. (courtesy of Michael Barrett, Troy, NY)
