Description:
This patent was subsequently improved by Juan S. L. Babbs, also of New Albany, Ind., in patent 60,843.

Williams' 1863 New Albany Directory lists S. E. Hartwell as a physician. 1860 and 1871 directories do not list Hartwell.The 1873 edition of Alumni Record of Wesleyan University has an entry, under their "class of 1841": "Samuel Eugene Hartwell. Born in Strong, Me. Practiced Law several years in New York City. Practiced Medicine a few years in Ohio, and then moved to New Albany, Ind. Invented a dovetailing machine. 1886, health failed. Returned to Strong, Me. 1868, went to Florida on account of his health. Died, August 1869, Strong, Me. Married while in New York City."
