Description: |
Phillips describes this as an improvement of his earlier patent (122,402, Jan. 2, 1872). It now has adjustable cranked handles at the sides. Otherwise it is generally similar to his first patent in that the bit automatically withdraws when the hollow mandrel carriage contacts an adjustable stop, and the uprights can be tilted and secured for boring at any angle. An example is reported without a maker's, name, just the patent date and faded gold stenciling that says, perhaps, "Save What it Costs". |
