| Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" cites an 1892 "Iron Age" listing showing this patent incorporated in the CHAMPION chain pipe wrench produced by the Ithaca Drop Forge Company of Ithaca, NY. The wrench also incorporated features of Bufford's July 15, 1890 and Dec. 9, 1890 patents (432,195 and 442,306). Bufford and Kitson assigned these patents to J.H. Williams & Co. in 1893. That assignment led to a series of suits and counter suits between WILCOX of Ithaca Drop Forge Co. and WILLIAMS.
Greene, Tweed & Co. was advertising a CHAMPION chain wrench in 1892; they were sole distributors for the wrench produced by Ithaca Drop Forge. Greene, Tweed & Co. introduced the "NEW CHAMPION" chain wrench with a similar structure in 1910 after the 1890 BUFFORD / KITSON patents had expired.
The J.H. Williams Company of Brooklyn was the assignee of several later Bufford chain wrench patents. |
