Description: |
"The slotted part of the tongs is so clamped to the pivot that the strain consequent upon the use of the tongs shall not separate the jaws by slipping the pivot in the slotted jaw." This is accomplished by having the slotted flat surface and thrust washer of the adjustable pivot tapered, so that the adjustment is held by wedge action.
Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" notes an 1858 SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN mention of GILMORE'S PATENT ADJUSTABLE PIPE TONGS.
James R. Brown's Aug. 2, 1859 pipe tongs patent (no. 24,927) calls attention to the shortcomings of this tongs in use. |
