Description:
The face of the wrench bar is threaded to engage threads on a nut in the adjustable jaw. The adjusting nut rides on an oval pin with a second adjusting knob, to throw the adjusting nut into or out of engagement with the teeth on the bar. This enables the wrench to operate with a quick and screw-adjust.

A GRAY BROTHERS (N.Y.) 1857 / 1858 listing shows a HYDE's PATENT GRIPPING WRENCH that incorporates features of this patent and Hyde's March 13, 1855 patent (no. 12,510).

A corroded example retrieved from a Civil War era shipwreck shows the "grain" of the upset wrought iron forming the head.
