Vintage Machinery entry for Berlin Machine Works
Description:
The innovation here is to tension the blade purely by the action of a spring; previous mechanisms had used a weight, or a weight in combination with a spring. The reputed disadvantage of a mechanism using a weight is that if a piece of scrap gets between the wheel and the blade, the inertia of the weight prevents the mechanism from adjusting quickly enough and the blade breaks as a result.
