| The patent is for a "rosette" design to transfer strain from the adjusting screw to the shank of a monkey wrench. It is a refinement of the design in Taft's Nov. 10, 1863 patent 40,590. A known example incorporating these patents is marked "CHAMPION MOWER AND REAPER WRENCH // PAT ??? 1863, FEB. 23, 1864" (The November 1863 date is partially obliterated on this example.) Another known example is marked "DODGE & WELLINGTON WORCESTER // PAT"D NOV. 10, 1863 FEB. 23, 1864"
These Taft patents figured prominently in various phases of the Collins / Coes patent infringement lawsuits, and were used for the L. Coes & Co. MECHANICS WRENCH in the 1870s.
A bit of trivia: The "signature" on the drawing is entirely in the handwriting style of Thomas H. Dodge or someone in his employ -- compare a "typical" Taft signature (like the drawing for patent 40,590). |
