Jeff Joslin Vintage Machinery entry for Smith & Phillips Mfg. Co.
|
Description: |
The innovation here is to cut kerfs in a rectangle on either side of a window stile so the two sets of kerfs do not quite intersect. A hammer blow then causes the wood between the kerfs to split, creating a pocket cover and a stepped opening, so that the cover sits exactly flush in the opening. A machine using this system was seen in an 1898 advertisement from Smith & Phillips Mfg. Co. |
