Description: |
| Spring catch (or known equivalent) to hold the level in place in combination with the "bearers" that establish horizontal reference line with the level. Known examples are marked under the vial: S. J. SHERMAN, NEW YORK / PATENTED JULY 19th, 1853 (the original patent)and uses a set screw instead of a spring catch arrangement for securing the level. Note that this patent shows his middle intial as "I." versus "J." - "J." is assumed corrected based on reported marks. |
