Description: |
This patent is a modification to the important patent 174,004 to support its use on a band sawmill. The mechanism uses a steam-cylinder carrying a piston connected to the log-carriage, with a pair of slide-valves to control the forward and reverse motion. However, the control mechanism used in the earlier patent was not suitable for use with band mills because band mills require more careful feed-rate control. A steam chest, as in patent 215,293, is used, but whereas the earlier design applied full force to get the carriage moving, this design uses a series of increasingly large triangular valve-ports that permit a progressive and adjustable application of power. |
