| This mortiser design was subsequently improved in 1863 patent 39,502 and 1870 patent 105,603. The 1863 patent says that it "is chiefly directed to provisions for placing the cut of the chisel under more complete control of the operator." The 1870 patent specification says, "These devices for operating the machine failed in practice on account of their complexity, also being unwieldy and liable to get out of order, and the improvements are to remedy these defects." |
