Stan Schulz READ RAPID TRANSIT WRENCH from 1879 AMERICAN MACHINIST (FLICKR)
|
Description: |
The adjustable jaw component has teeth engaging a rack on the main shank for quick adjustment, and an intermediate screw to "take up lost motion." Marketed as the READ & BEACH RAPID TRANSIT. Read patented pipe jaw and pipe cutter attachments for this wrench on May 14, 1878 (Pat. No. 203,774). The wrench and these accessories were described in an 1879 AMERICAN MACHINIST writeup. An overall "improvement" patent granted May 24, 1881 (Pat. No. 241,881) is reflected in markings on some examples of the READ RAILROAD WRENCH. |
