Description:
This invention was originally marketed as "The Hookless Fastener", but one of their early customer, B. F. Goodrich Co., used the name "Zipper Boots" for their rubber boots with Hookless Fasteners, and the "Zipper" name ended up being applied to the fastener itself. The Hookless Fastener Co. didn't use that name though, eventually adopting the trade name "Talon" and then changed its name to Talon, Inc. At the time that this patent expired in 1934, the Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikigaisha (Yoshida Manufacturing Co.) was founded to manufacture zippers. It took decades but YKK eventually passed Talon to become the dominant supplier of zippers worldwide.

Over the years numerous improvements have been made to the zipper, such as an automatic slider locking mechanism (Gideon Sundback's patent 2,215,745), and the nylon coil zipper (patents 3,147,529 and 3,316,870), but Sundback's original zipper design is still manufactured substantially unchanged, and is favored for such applications as for the flies of denim jeans.
