Description: |
| A couple of different gear arrangements to transfer motion from the lever handle to the movable jaw are shown and described, along with several alternate jaw forms. The general principles are to have a tool that will not work open during use, and that has controlled pressure to avoid crushing.
One of the forms in this patent evolved into the version shown in patent no. 1,862,817.
Earliest production of the tool appears to have been attempted in 1918; one account says orders were taken, but the manufacturing arrangement failed. Known examples marked EIFEL-FLASH PLIERENCH MOD. 8"-A-21 // THE EIFEL-FLASH SALES CORP'N-CHICAGO PAT. MAY 2, 1926 with smooth handle surfaces and three interchangeable movable jaws appear to have been introduced in the fall of 1921. A slightly different version with "textured" handles followed -- EIFEL-FLASH PLIERENCH 8 1/2"-B-22 // THE FLASH SALES CORP'N CHICAGO / PAT. MAY 2, 1916. Later production of this form with "textured" handles and slightly different arrangement of parts had simpler markings -- EIFEL-FLASH PLIERENCH / PAT 5.2.16 // FLASH S'L'S CHICAGO.
Eifel conducted an extensive ongoing advertising campaign for the plierench with a focus on direct marketing. |
