| Prior to this patent, boiler tubes were typically flared either using a die that has hammered into the end of the tube, or else a tool with tapered rollers was forced into the end of the tube to expand it after the tube had been forced through a tightly fitting hole in the tube sheet. Ferguson's improved tool used cylindrical rollers set obliquely in a roller-cage. In use, the tube was placed up to a hole in the tube-sheet and Ferguson's expander is inserted through the tube sheet and into the tube. The tool is rotated which draws the tube through the hole and simultaneously flares the end, affixing the tube to the sheet. This proved to be a significant improvement to the state of the art. Ferguson's invention was manufactured by A. L. Henderer & Co. of Wilmington, Delaware, which was still manufacturing them in 1975.Although Augustus L. Henderer's 1892 patent 483,920 does not mention this Ferguson patent, it does constitute an improvement on it. |
