This device measures the slope of a tangent to a curve, which is a type of "goniometer", a slope-measuring device. This is the "Gerber Derivimeter" which provides a rotating tangent line and a perpendicular pointer that references a semi-circular scale from which the slope is read. Fine-adjustment knobs are provided. A competing design, the German-made "Ott Derivimeter"(labeled "A. Ott / Kempten / Bayern") used mirrors to ease the process of finding the correct tangent. Thus far we have not found a patent for the Ott Derivimeter. The Ott design was simpler and more robust, and came with a sturdy wooden case in contrast to the stitched cardboard case of the Gerber. Both the Gerber and the Ott are quite rare. Videos of each can be found on YouTube. |
