Description:

Joseph Stubs was the son and business partner of Peter Stubs, under whose name this wrench was manufactured.

This patent wrench was "Communicated by a foreigner", which means that the invention was due to someone outside England; English law at the time did not allow foreigners to hold patents directly, but a patent for the idea can be awarded to an agent, who was Joseph Stubs in this instance.

The book "The Adjustable Spanner" by Ron Geesin has 3/4 of a page (p. 149 plus end note #464) devoted to Peter and Joseph Stubs. Geesin suggests that the source of the design may have been French, as at that time Joseph was in France, representing his father's company. This wrench's mechanism certainly does not match any American patent wrenches of the era.
