Description: |
The inventor was deceased by the time the patent was issued. The March 1899 issue of Hardware Dealers Magazine (vol. XL, No. 3, page vii) has an illustrated writeup of this product. The illustration clearly shows the machine is labeled "The Universal Sharpening Machine Co. / Chicago, U.S.A. / Patent. Appd. For". The article says "John Chatillon & Sons, 85 Cliff street, New York, are placing on the market the 'Universal' Sharpening Machine illustrated..." In fact, two machines are shown: a tabletop version matching the patent drawing, and a floor-standing model "intended for the use of packers, canners, butchers, farmers, hotels and restaurants." Both models were intended for sharpening cutlery. Page 385 of the same issue has a full-page ad for the sharpeners. |
