| This is roughly the US equivalent of British patent GB-189,730,513, although the design shown in the US patent drawings seems more refined than what is shown in the British patent drawing. The invention is an ingenious solution to the challenge of holding irregularly shaped objects for machining operations, and especially when a series of similarly shaped objects are to be held in position, e.g., for drilling or milling. The vise consists of a fairly commonplace vise for irregular forms that where a second-stage clamping operation loosens and tightens the vise as a whole. The first part is carefully clamped and positioned using the inner jaws that can conform to an irregular workpiece. A wrench is used to affix the irregular jaws, and then the workpiece as a whole is held in place by tightening the vise screw with the large handle. After the first piece is machined, the large handle is turned so the workpiece can be removed; a new workpiece is placed in the jaws and the vise is again tightened using the handle, holding the second workpiece in exactly the same position as the first, with no need to adjust the irregular jaws or reposition the vise in relation to the machine. |
