Abstract:
The hardness of the material under test is estimated by measuring the rebound of an extremely-hard pointed hammer released at a certain height. The hammer falls between guides or in a thin glass tube 10 graduated empirically, and is released by the compression of a bulb 29 which forces back a spring-pressed piston 27, Fig. 4, and withdraws a catch from the hammer 11. A plumb-bob 19 is provided to ensure accurate setting of the instrument, and a pointer 17 and lens 18 are carried to give accurate readings. A suction bulb is used to raise the hammer to the top of the tube, the space above the hammer being then opened to the air to equalize the pressure. In a modification the hammer is maintained in its raised position by a catch engaging in a recess, said catch being pushed out to release it.
