| The inventor's surname is variously rendered MacDuff or M'Duff; his first name is unknown. This patent does not actually exist even though there are multiple mentions of it. We also have an illustration and description of the invention—which is real even if the patent is not—due to an 1830 article on the awarding of the "Dr. Fellowes' Annual Prize". This invention is the earliest known scrollsaw for doing fine work. It won the Dr. Fellowes' Annual Prize on 1829-12-02 for "the best machine invented by a Working Member of the London Mechanics' Institution", and is a lathe attachment for performing "Boulle work", which is a process of cutting out pieces of veneer for marquetry. |
