| This patent is for a wood planer whose cutter-head is in the form of a flattened cone or dished wheel, and it is an attempt to avoid infringing on the Woodworth patent, 5,315X. In about the holders of the Woodworth patent sued Ira Gay, arguing that the essential feature of the Woodworth design was the "dip and lift cut", that is, the cutting knife came at the wood from above, cut into the wood, and the continued the cut back up and out of the wood. Changing the shape of the cutterhead from a cylinder to a truncated cone, they successfully argued, did not change the essential nature of the cutter head. |
